| 520 | |a The present study attempts to understand the socio-demographic characteristics of family planning acceptors within the broader framework of government approaches. Data from various policy documents and Family Welfare Year Books along with the National Family Health Survey-III (2005-06) have been reviewed and analysed to illustrate the levels and trends of contraceptive use in the context of various policies. The analytical approach includes both bivariate and multivariate analysis using SPSS 15.0. Although more than one-third of Indian women use female sterilization as a method for regulating fertility, people from different socio-economic, religious and demographic strata do not generally opt for sterilization in equal proportion. Informed choice was found to be very poor and so also the quality of services. The government needs to think about improving information education and communication, better quality services, region-specific strategies and the importance of spacing methods. | ||
