Throughout history it has been home to many ancient civilizations and empires, some dating back to 2500 BC. Ancient India was made up of a myriad of kingdoms with constantly changing boundaries.Culture and religions have flourished over the millennia, and foreign influence has ebbed and flowed. From the mountainous Afghan frontier to the jungles of Burma - it was famously under foreign rule from the early 1800s until the demise of the British Raj in 1947. With its many languages, cultures and religions, India is highly diverse. This is also reflected in its federal political system, whereby power is shared between the central government and 28 states. However, communal and regional tensions continue to haunt Indian politics, sometimes threatening its longstanding democratic and secular ethos. There have been three wars between India and its arch-rival Pakistan since 1947, two of them over the disputed territory of Kashmir. And in November 2008 nearly 200 people were killed and hundreds injured in a series of terrorist attacks by gunmen on India\'s financial capital Mumbai. India blamed militants from Pakistan. From the late 1980s India began to open up to the outside world, encouraging economic reform and foreign investment. It is now courted by the world\'s leading economic and political powers, including its one-time foe China. The world\'s largest democracy and second most populous country (1.2 billion people) emerged as a major power in the 1990s.The country had a burgeoning urban middle class and made great strides in fields such as information technology. Its large, skilled workforce makes it a popular choice for international companies seeking to outsource work. Poverty alleviation and literacy campaigns are ongoing for the mass of the impoverished rural population. India has launched its own space satellites and in 2008 sent its first spacecraft to the moon. It also boasts a massive cinema industry, the \Bollywood\ products of which are among the most widely-watched films in the world. From its roots in ancient civilization, today India has become a flourishing, vibrant nation with an ever growing economy powered by a nation of people working hard to make India greater by the day. | ||
