Various historical processes have resulted in the emergence of a spatial form which is neither rural nor urban. The most outstanding among the causes of urbanization is imperialism and its impact on the pattern of settlements. The paper studies the roots and upshot of fierce colonial regime in the evolution of an urban spatial form in Kollam. The urban growth in the region has been addressed with the theory of economic dependency. The theory postulates that the centers which specialized in administrative and commercial functions due to colonial impact had emerged into urban systems. The search employs historical method to explain the process of urbanization in the city. The study brings to light that the growth of the region into an urban space was chiefly hinged on the imperial powers for foreign capital and technologies. Hence, the spatial structure of Kollam is in conformity with the theory of economic dependency.
