520 |a Government of India has been promoting sanitation coverage in a campaign mode to ensure better health and quality of life for people in rural India.To add vigour to its implementation, GOI launched an award based incentive scheme for fully sanitized and open free Gram Panchayats, Blocks, Districts and States called Nirmal Gram Puruskar (NGP) in October 2003.Results of the study show that Kerala has made remarkable progress in eliminating the practice of open defecation. It is very clear from the number of GPs -980 out of 999 GPs – who were awarded NGP in Kerala. This paper has made an attempt to analyses the performance of Nirmal Gram Puraskar (NGP) in India during the period 2005-2011.
