520 |a This article is an attempt at unravelling the intricate relationship among land alienation, housing segregation and socio-economic attributes of the tribes of Kerala. The study uses data amassed from various state government departments. Land alienation and housing segregation are the two inseparable rudiments that tend to act and react upon each other, forcing the tribes to remain in a dismal state of poverty. Despite the existence of strong legislations and numerous housing and resettlement schemes, land still remains a mirage to the tribal population. Various housing schemes of both the central and the state governments have not made any beneficial change in the quality of housing of the tribes. Ironing out the loopholes in the implementation of the tribal legislations and schemes is the only way out. Some visible changes have taken place in the housing and settlement patterns of landowning tribes such as the Kurumans and the Malayarayans.
