Kole wetlands is a Ramsar Site since 2002 (Islam and Rahmani, 2008), Important Bird Area since 2004 (Islam and Rahmani, 2004) and a High Value Biodiversity Area since 2009 (MoEF, 2009). A total of 186 species of birds belonging to 16 orders and 54 families were recorded from kole wetlands of Thrissur District during the present study (2009-2012). Among the total number of species recorded, 57 species were transcontinental migrants including a vagrant species, 21 species were local migrants, 104 species were residents, and 4 were stragglers. The maximum number of bird species were recorded from Enamakkal site (158). The Cattle Egret, Little Cormorant, Little Egret, Common Swallow, Whiskered Tern were the more dominant species recorded. The birds namely Malabar Crested Lark, Blyth’s Starling, White-cheeked Barbet and the Jungle Babbler were the endemic birds. In the present study, 13 species of birds exceeded 1% of biogeographical population (Ramsar Criteria) every year. The study results showed that the kole wetlands of Thrissur supported a good number of migrants as well as residents. The present dewatering schedule implemented in the kole wetlands by district administration helped a lot in the distribution of birds in the kole wetlands, especially during the migratory period, which coincides with paddy cultivation. As the kole wetlands are situated in the ‘Central Asian-Indian Fly Way’ route of migratory birds, it is the duty of every citizen and Government to protect these wetlands along with these birds.
