To address this „real housing problem‟ in India it is imperative that alternative models for housing finance like housing microfinance (HMF) are promoted. Though HMF has been a quite successful tool in many parts of the world for addressing the housing problem of the poor and the marginalized, the same is yet to pick up considerable momentum in India. In the above context, this paper seeks to make a critical review of “Bhavanashree” – the HMF project of the poverty alleviation programme called “Kudumbashree” sponsored by the Government of Kerala. The paper suggests a few broad strategies for faster growth of HMF in India for rapid housing development and hence national economic development.
