Riassunto:Advocates of banninig of cow slaughter, in sup port of which demand Vinoba Bhave has started a fast from April 22, like to claim that their caise rests on the rational econom.ic argument that slaugh- ter of cotvs reduces milk produtction and harm the livestock economy and agricultural production. This paper seeks to examine this argument with reference ?o Kerala, one of the two states which ha-ve so far refused to impose a total bait on slaughter of cows. The author discusses 7he exitent o? bovine slaughter in Kerala, the factors rIesponsible for the increase in slauighlt,er in recent years and the effects of slaughlter on the size and composition of the .1ate's bovine population. Cattle slaughter in Kerala, the author concludes, has resulted in a rise in milk atid meat output and a ban on slaughlter of cattle, especially cows, will adversely affect on-going livestock development projects and the weaker sections of the popudation.
