The absence of sufficient money creates demand for borrowings in order to fulfil their wants and needs like to buy or construct a home, to buy a car, to pay the fee for higher education, health issues, wedding, to purchase durable and luxury goods, to invest and it may be to pay off loans itself. The 70 th AIDIS (All India Debt Investment Survey) of NSSO reported 31.4 per cent of rural and 22.4 per cent urban households in India were indebted and in Kerala which reported 49.5 percent of rural and 47 per cent of urban indebted households respectively. While comparing with 59 th NSSO AIDIS reveals the extent of household debt in Kerala is increasing in each decade. 70 th NSSO report shows, Kerala is the first position in rural household debt in India and it’s not only in IOI but also in AOD. This study attempts to analyse the extent of household debt in rural Kerala based on 70 th round NSSO survey (AIDIS-2013). Incidence of indebtedness is increasing year by year. Debt asset ratio of different decile asset holding classes shows debt is higher among the poor households. Rural and urban gives almost same trend in household debt. It increased around 10 percent within 10 years. There exist high rate of incidence of indebtedness in Kerala while comparing to other states in India. So, household debt should get attention in Kerala. | ||
