There were alternative single party governments led by the Janata Party / Janata Dal (dominated by the Lingayats, the Vokkaligas and the Brahmins) and by the Congress (dominated by the weaker sections and the minorities) between 1983 and 2004. The split in the Janata Dal and domination of Shri H.D. Deve Gowda (Vokkaliga, former prime minister) in the Janata Dal (S) and the neglect of the Lingayats in the Congress and the J.D.(S) tempted the Lingayats to join the B.J.P. led by a Lingayat leader, Shri B.S. Yediyurappa. Reduction in the support bases of the J.D.(S) and the Congress and marginal increase in the support bases of the B.J.P. resulted in the split verdict of the electorate in 2004 assembly elections. The stability of three coalition governments between 2004 and 2007 was affected by several factors. | ||
