It tries to perceive some of the emerging challenges of the regional organization and strategies to be adopted to resolve them for a brighter future. While examining the achievements and limitation of SAARC in the past decades, the author come to the conclusion that the declarations and expectations of SAARC have generally out-distanced its real functioning. SAARC has coined many slogans and formulated many declarations but no sincere attempt was made to mitigate the burning issues of member nations like addressing regional environmental issues, assisting economic development of member countries ; especially in their fights against poverty, illiteracy and diseases. The lessons from last two decades of SAARC performance prove that the South Asian regionalism cannot be strengthened without India’s stern intervention. In spite of Pakistan’s hostility and challenges, India’s leading role is very much accepted by all other members. The emergence of charismatic political leadership and genuine strategies of the ruling elites can accomplish the expectations into a reality. | ||
