Shrnutí:Declining informal care constituted by immediate surroundings, that Kerala experiences increases the burden of ageing. Changes in family composition and economic and community life affect the extant kin; neighbor and friends support the elderly population. Religious community and relatives also form part of an informal care system in Kerala, especially because of the strong community relationships. Lack of attention from the near and dear persons gives rise to a feeling of negligence and avoidance. This is especially true in case of physically ill and dependent elderly persons. Using the data collected from a representative sample from Ernakulam and Kozhikode districts of Kerala state, an analysis across various aspects of informal care systems is made in this paper. Feeling of ageing has a direct bearing on issues related to an informal care system. The state sector and voluntary sector should be sensitized to improve the informal care system rather than the public support systems.
