The states were classified into developed and less developed states based on their per capita income in comparison to the national per capita income. The study has pointed out that regional disparities have reduced in indicators such as GSDP growth rate, cash-deposit ratio, literacy rate and population growth rate from pre-reform period (1980-81) to post-reform period (2010-11), while regional inter-states disparity increased in per capita income, HDI, per capita development expenditure. Inter-state disparities increased during initial phase of economic reforms but disparities in some of the indicators declined during 2000-01 to 2010-11 post-reform period. All states showed improvements in literacy rate, per capita income, growth rate, HDI, development expenditure, credit-deposit ratio during post-reform period though interstate disparities rose in these indicators. Based on the findings, the study has concluded that continuous process of economic reforms can remove the disparities in the remaining indicators as well. Improvement in centre-state relations, infrastructural investment (public/private), restraining population growth, enhancement in production capacity and human development resources particularly in economically backward states will help to reduce interregional disparities
