Improvement in household welfare may be observed from trends in diversification of income sources, assets acquired, food consumption patterns, expenditure on the education of children and access to health facilities and reduction in vulnerability. The study brings mixed results of the impact of SGSY on household welfare and vulnerability. The average level of income earned by members was fairly good. The study observed improvement in the assets base among the members. However many members had not purchased any productive items, and loan amounts from banks as well as groups were also the main source of finance to acquire these assets. Members experienced improvement in food, health and education expenditure but again in many cases, the loan amounts had been providing the main assistance rather than income. Thus the study communicates a limited impact of microfinance on household welfare. On the issue of risky situations, a good number of respondents claimed that microfinance helped them to reduce their vulnerability but the risk management strategies observed are only temporary because the main focus is on loans rather than increasing income and building assets. | ||
