The organized manufacturing sector experienced negative growth rate in employment in the post-reform period, i.e. era of `jobless growth‘. The economic reforms have undoubtedly ushered in an economic boom but this has not created enough jobs. Capital picked up slowly in the post-reform period and is still to be fully reflected in output and value addition. Inter-industry differences in the growth rate of labour productivity are quite high. This may have been the outcome of differences in technological developments, trained manpower and utilization of resources. The growth rate of total factor productivity is higher in the pre-reform period compared to the post-reform period for all the selected industries and at their disaggregative level except the basic metal and alloy industry and its sub-groups. Deceleration in output in the post-reform period has its origin in slow capacity growth and failure to keep the momentum of productivity growth. Fixed capital contributed favourably in employment generation in production, processing, preservation of fish, fruit, vegetables, meat, etc., manufacture of other food products basic metal and alloy, basic iron and steel and casting of metals industries during the pre-reform as well as post-reform period. Labour being a derived demand, increases with increase in output in manufacture of food industry, manufacture of starch and starch products and manufacture of railway tramway and rolling stock industries but decrease with reduction in output in manufacture of motor vehicles industry.
