This is more so in a country like India where overwhelming majority of elderly lack any form of social security. In this context, the present paper examines the living arrangements, economic dependency and health conditions of the elderly based on data from National Sample Surveys (52nd and 60th rounds) for the state of Punjab. About 10 percent of the aged were living with their spouses and 49 percent were living with children. Nearly 48 percent of the aged were economically dependent on others for their day-to-day survival. Twenty percent of the aged perceive their health condition as poor. Punjab also has higher levels of out-migration which has implications for the care of the elderly left behind. While formulating policies and programmes for the welfare of aged, we need to address their economic dependency, health conditions and living arrangements. | ||
