520 | |a The turn of the century has witnessed a fresh wave of interest in the field of social sciences in the country. A sense of crisis faced by social sciences, which emanates from the change in the orientation of the world economy, is evident. Ever since India entered into the fray more actively in 1991, social science disciplines within a narrow and perverse logic of utility are increasingly seen as being a “non-utility”. The discourse on this issue is visible in the form of discussions, seminars, workshops, individual contributions, and lately in overwhelming reactions from different disciplines and organizational settings on the recommendations of the Fourth Review Committee of the Indian Council of Social Science Research. It could not have been better timed when no less than a Prime Minister is a social scientist of outstanding repute. On this very tone, this paper dwells on the idea of social science, maps its journey of evolution and practice, examines the issue of indigenisation of approach to the study of social issues, and identifies some emerging social issues in the contemporary context. It is based on the reading of relevant literature that has appeared on the subject. All this calls for a comprehensive social science policy in the country to evolve a holistic, multidisciplinary, indigenised paradigm for social science research. | ||
