It is noted that intra-regional SAARC trade has registered an upward trend during this period. The volume of trade, in US$ terms, more than doubled during the first 10 years of SAARC, and during the next 10 years, it increased by more than five times, with 1985 as the base year. The rate of increase in intra-SAARC trade has been of higher order than that of the global-SAARC trade during this period. However, the share of intra-SAARC trade, in total global trade, remained between 2.4 per cent to 2.8 per cent during the first five years of SAARC and oscillated between three to four per cent during the remaining period. As such, the actual intra-SAARC trade is much below its potential.
