Shrnutí:Special Economic Zone studies in India throw a paradox. When India was opening its market to the world, the emergence of the SEZ was not important, and it is once the country is more open that the government has gone in for the SEZ Act. Is opening a window a way to keep the rest of the country closed, and is the number of SEZs a good means to reflect the degree of globalisation achieved? Are the current SEZs working as envisaged? How are local interests linked to global expansions? In this article, we study and compare the evolution of the Indian economic policy vis-à-vis the adoption of the SEZ policy. Then we establish the link between the local and the global at four main scales, from the SEZ to the city, from the city to the state, from the state to India, and from India to the world. Examples of various SEZs visited in the spirit of fieldwork have been incorporated to illustrate the debate.
