Opis
Streszczenie:This book looks at popular women's journals like Sananda, Cosmopolitan and Elle, advertisements, TV serials and media icons, arguing that it is in popular culture that the discourses of modernity, feminism and progress, all articulated by the modernity, feminism and progress, all articulated by the women's movement, take place for most women. Are the demands of the women's movement met or are new accommodations formed in the name of women's liberation? What are the implicationsfor feminism? How do women respond to popular media constructions of feminine and masculine identies? Popular cultural narratives are not merely accepted and internalized but given empathetic readings by women who engage with them, who try to negotiate existential anxieties and personal choices. Chanda suggests that culture is not a sort of media merchandise; that neither is femininity an abstract ideal; both rest within linguistic worldviews, influencing our and her respondents' attitudes.
